This is the longest running LPC Supervisor training course in Texas; our initial status was originally approved by the state of Texas in 2005. Sue Clifford, Ph.D., LPC-S courses fully meet the continuing education credit approved provider criteria set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors (2024). I update the curriculum multiple times throughout the year, meeting and exceeding all licensing rule mandates. I update every course within days of every new licensing rulebook posting. The most recent LPC Rule changes posted on 8/20/24, and our courses were updated and ready to go! Additionally, I email the most recent rulebook to everyone when the course certificate is sent (in case there are rulebook changes while you are in the training process).
All trainings meet full compliance with the updated January 2024 CE updates with no restrictions.
Specifically, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors no longer approves programs or providers. All Sue Clifford, Ph.D., LPC-S trainings meet the continuing education requirements as listed in Title 22 Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 681, Subchapter J, Section 681.142 Acceptable Continuing Education.
There are major shifts in Texas mental health licensing, and finding information can be difficult during the ongoing updates. The course is updated along with the changes. Currently, you must:
1. Be fully licensed in good standing for five years as a Texas LPC (post LPC Internship)
2. Take a Texas 40 hour LPC Supervisor training course as mandated in state licensing rules and receive a certificate of completion.
3. Submit an application with fee for the Supervisor specialty designation to be added to your current Texas LPC license.
No other exams, etc. are required. You complete the course. Then you complete the application process submitting the certificate received from the training along with the fee via the BHEC/TSBEPC online portal. Nothing more is required (no practicum, exams, etc.).
Training courses are separate from applying to the licensing unit, just as your graduate degree was separate from your initial license application. Any more specific/situational questions about qualifications to become an LPC must be addressed to the licensing unit, and are not our call to answer. We recommend emailing any questions that fall outside the specifics listed above to the licensing unit.
The at-home course is only offered during this time. This course is NOT online where you log onto a portal. It is comprised solely of readings, reflections, inventories, and mock scenario exercises, including developing a final mock or real supervision plan in Word format. It can be downloaded, and worked on without internet connection. There are no video, streaming, or live training components. Do not take this course if you have another preferred method of learning as there are other options available in Texas that may be a better fit.
Everything is emailed to you with detailed course instructions within 24 hours of purchase/registration, Monday-Friday/less holidays. Current licensing rules mandate courses expire and must be restarted (which means repurchased) 90 days from initial work. Therefore, our course requires completion at 75 days to give time for a buffer; we may not read and grade as soon as it is submitted (and we may need to kick-back if parts are left incomplete). This buffer provides for these scenarios without fear of course expiration. Conversely, the minimum amount of time to complete the training is ten days from the date of purchase.
LPC Supervisors in Texas must be fully licensed which means after LPC Internship/Associate status for five years. With fast moving changes (five in the past year alone), we recommend taking the course no sooner than six months before you reach five years. Otherwise you risk your course being invalid if rules change, and/or trained with outdated information. You will "hold onto your certificate from the course" and apply when eligible. Specific information about licensing protocols (i.e., timeline to upgrade to LPC-S. process, fees, etc) are easily accessible and listed on the BHEC/TSBEPC website. As a matter of fact, these types of questions are part of real-life exercises included as part of our training course.
The mandated course content is outlined for all 40 hour LPC Supervisor training courses in the Texas LPC Rules. I can email our course Agenda/Course Content Rubric that also includes the exact rules if you email me at LPCReview@aol.com. If you are inquiring about another state (either practicing in another state and taking our training to meet that state's needs, or moved to Texas from another state and have questions about your Texas eligibility), please contact the state licensing unit directly. That is beyond our scope of knowledge.
The at-home course is only offered during this time. This course is NOT online where you log onto a portal. It is comprised solely of a review of Texas LPC licensing ethics and rules and an ethics scenario exercise. The goal of the course is a six-hour refresher in licensing rules to improve competency in supervision. If LPC Supervisors cannot locate rules and navigate the licensing rulebook efficiently, this indicates a deficiency that increases liability for the supervisor and the supervisee.
This course is offered in two identical formats. You can directly download the course upon purchase ($75). You can have the same exact course emailed to you if do not want to do the download option ($95). They are identical courses. You choose one that best fits you.
The course is presented in MS Word format. Both options can be worked on without an internet connection. There are no video, streaming, or live training components. Do not take this course if you have another preferred method of learning as there are other options available in Texas that may be a better fit. Detailed instructions are also provided with the courses.
Download Option: You purchase the course and download both the course e-booklet (MS Word format) and Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors Rulebook (PDF format). Complete the course as instructed at your own pace and return via email (LPCReview@aol.com).
Email option: Everything is emailed to you with detailed course instructions within 24 hours of purchase/registration, Monday-Friday/less holidays during traditional business hours.
Everyone: The course is emailed back to LPCReview@aol.com upon completion and expires in 12 months. The completed training is reviewed, and a certificate of completion is emailed to the address provided with registration within 24 hours, Monday-Friday/less holidays during traditional business hours.
Registrants can divide the course continuing education (CE) hours as needed, as long as there is no "double dipping." The entire six-hour course is Texas LPC supervision ethics listed on the certificate of completion. Here are some ways folks use the training (choose one):
1. Six hours general CE
2. Six hours Texas LPC supervision CE
3. Three hours Texas LPC ethics CE and three hours general CE
4. Three hours Texas LPC supervision CE and three hours general CE
5. Three hours Texas LPC supervision CE and three hours Texas LPC ethics CE
6. Starting January 2024, carry over some of the CE hours to their next licensing period per licensing rules
What is not allowed: Six hours Texas LPC supervision CE and six hours Texas LPC ethics CE.
The only form of payment accepted is credit card through our website shopping portal. If a card is declined due to institutional/governmental blocks, the registration will be canceled (some need a W9 and to add us to acceptable payments; please do this before registering an employee by emailing a request to LPCReview@aol.com). In lieu of PO, etc, we recommend employees register, pay, and seek reimbursement. Additionally, we need the registrant's name and email for the course. Please provide this either as the primary or in special instructions; we do not need an administrator's contact information. We do not have "office staff" available to answer phone messages about payment; our website is easy and efficient to register.
Sue Clifford, Ph.D., LPC-S fully meets the continuing education credit approved provider criteria set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors (2024).
These are some of the most frequently asked questions. Again, if any specific--to-you licensing situations/questions, please contact the proper licensing entity to ensure you receive correct information. Since I am a full time counselor, supervisor, and counselor educator, I cannot provide information via phone call. However, I am always available by email at LPCReview@aol.com. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I look forward to working together! Sue :)
